Welcome to our Book Thief Blog!

Amazon.ca describes this book as a "dark and powerfully absorbing novel, brilliantly executed". It's narrator calls it "just as small story, really." Jump in with both feet and surrender to one of the most gripping, unusual, hilarious books I've read in years. It's a book about books, about hate, about love, and about how words can be our most powerful weapons.

This is how Hans Hubermann looks to me, all silver and deep in thought, with his habitual cigarette in hand.

This is how I imagine Max Vandenburg. Although this is a little cleaner than I imagine him. I couldn't find a proper picture that fits how I see Max. But this is the closest I could get :)

This is how i see "Death" because in the picture it's like a shadow or a blur of darkness and he has a chair next to him, like he is there with the characters in the novel just waiting until it's there time to go. Besides in there eyes he is not able to be seen.

This is close to how I picture Death. I think the only thing I'd add would be a fedora and a few indistinct features such as; the slight outline of a mouth, nose and two darker spots for the eyes.

This reminded me of Rudy and Tommie going to their Hitler Youth group. It also reminds me of the second time Liesel stole a book because they started the ceremonies by marching in. Also, the boy on the far right in the back reminds me of Tommie just because it looks like he's having a bit of a hard time figuring out what he's supposed to do.

This is how I imagine Death to be. The kind of character that is never truly seen, and all dark. To me, Death gives an impression of a mean guy. In the photo, the person I chose gives me an impression that he feels like he can do anything he wants. This is similar to Death, he can tell the story any way he wants.

This is how I see the corner store (Aryan). Where liesel and Rudy went when finding a pfennig on the ground. This is where Frau Diller is the store keeper. I choose this photo because it is small, old looking and on the corneer of a bare street like the one descirbed in the book.

This is how I imagine the library or the area where the mayor's wife keeps her books. This picture was chosen because when I read the novel, I get the impression that the books are located in a huge area for Liesel to steal because it gives lots of opportunity for her to come back again.

This is how I think Frau Diller would look peering over the top of her counter at Liesel and Rudy. (Waiting for that Heil Hitler) However minus the ruler and in my mind her hair was natural- not dyed. However, it does convey the vantage point that I wanted.

This is how I imagine the basement where Max sleeps. I think that this picture should be chosen for the basement because it is messy just like what Hans said when the Nazi's came to inspect their basement. In my opinion, there is not a whole lot of items in the basement because that family is poor and can't afford a whole lot of stuff.

  23. This really sucks that you can't post actual pictures, because I doubt anyone will actually take the time to look at these :(
But anyways this image is how I picture that street, the one where all the Jewish shops were before the Jews were run out of business. This street is mentioned in the book when Leisel walks through it a few times- we're told of Stars of David painted on doors, smashed windows and run down looking places. Though it lacks the yellow stars, this street has the dirty, abandoned, deserted look that I would imagine the street in the novel would have.
** I forget what the street is called, someone could help me out with that if they like :)

Ok I know that picture is tiny and kinda crappy, but I thought it was perfect to depict how the book burnnig in the novel would have looked. In the middle we see a pile of books being burned, and surrounding it are a bunch of people, some in full uniform. These, I think, would be the Nazis of the group. We also notice that everyones arms are raised at what appears to be 45 degrees, in the "Heil Hitler" stance. Given that this picture is black and white, I wonder if I actually stumbled upon an authentic picture from a Jewish book burning !

  63. This is how I viewed Frau Diller’s shop; I viewed it as an old candy store almost like the one in the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie, except with the Nazi flag in the background and a woman instead of a man as the shop keeper. I think the child in the picture is also a decent portrayal of Rudy. http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://fastfood.ocregister.com/files/2008/07/powells_candyshop.jpg&imgrefurl=http://fastfood.ocregister.com/2008/07/09/old-fashioned-candy-shoppe-opens-bringing-sweets-and-memories/1606/&usg=__9AaSlc4pfRGPDeH_6wLAXvmwacc=&h=244&w=440&sz=20&hl=en&start=0&sig2=2o0nPHC-dluk4vF0HwJvqA&zoom=1&tbnid=ME8L8TenUCZdPM:&tbnh=133&tbnw=200&ei=b0KbTf3ZJI-yuAO9uYTQBg&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dold%2Bcandy%2Bshop%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Dactive%26sa%3DX%26gbv%3D2%26biw%3D1004%26bih%3D580%26tbm%3Disch&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=495&vpy=103&dur=9219&hovh=167&hovw=302&tx=182&ty=72&oei=U0KbTa_bNM_Ksgbr6_zqBQ&page=1&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0

I think that this picture reflects when Rudy went running on the track at night, trying to be Jesse Owens. In the picture it is night, which I thought was perfect due to the fact that when Rudy escaped, it was night time.

  72. I agree with Victoria that, this picture fits all the descriptions of what the book gave. I think that this was a very well chosen picture for the library. There are lots of books, to reflect the number of different books she can choose to steal from.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I agree with Justin G that the image of the two hands meeting each other makes a very good comparison to the relationship between Max and Liesel. In the photo, the hands start off far away and come closer. This is just like the book, Max and Liesel at first didn't have a very good relationship but as time went by it got better and better.

  74. I think that Steffany King's picture of the mayor's house fits the book's descriptions very well. For example, the house in the picture looks like it would be meant for a rich person which in this case is the mayor. Another reason why this is a good picture is because there is a window to fit the fact that Liesel will try to climb into their to steal more books. Also, the house overlooks everyone making it seem like it is more superior than the other houses in Molching.

I would descibe Death as like the staue because our first impression about staues are that they are fake but did exist and Death is alive but to us he appears as dead becasue we can't see him. Also death is important and people that get made into statues are important. This statue is also dark like Death and is above us watching us like this statue is seen as. The rest of the picture is how i think Death see's the world, brocken with nobodey because Death takes the souls of people and that is all he is alive for.

This picture is how I see Hans and Rosa's basement, were Max sleeps. This picture is similar to the description I have found in the book because it is a dark room, the basement looks cold because there is no flooring and there's holes in the wall and it does not look safe. 107. This is the picture shown in our books, I think it is really well done. It really describes a powerless girl that fought for her survivor only. And the fact that the picture is black and white, and has so little detail to it adds to the effect it is trying to give the reader, which is unequallity and power advantage.

This is how I see the streets of Molching, before the war started. It's dark, bair, old looking, small and I don't think there is many streets in the book and this picture shows a main street that only leads to one other street.

This is how I see Hans's eyes. Silver and mysterious. Although his eyes probably did not look exactly like this becasue that is not a normal eye, and Hans's eyes were probably descibed as silver for a reason, like foreshadowing rather than just a colour of an eye.
